Algonquin College alumna wins medals at Invictus Games

OTTAWA — Algonquin College congratulates alumna Naomi Fong on her medal-winning achievements at the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney, Australia.

An honours graduate of the Social Service Worker program at the College’s Pembroke Campus, Fong won two bronze medals this week in separate Women’s Road Cycling competitions.

Fong was one of 40 Canadians, including 18 military members and 22 veterans, competing in 11 different sports during the week-long games, and was the Team Canada flag bearer for the opening ceremonies on Saturday.

Fong served for nine years in the Canadian Armed Forces before becoming an Algonquin student two years ago. She suffers from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and uses the Games as a way to deal with her illness.

Besides the cycling competition, Fong planned to compete wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and powerlifting.

The Invictus Games, an international event created by Prince Harry, allow wounded and injured armed services personnel and veterans to compete in numerous sports.
