Algonquin wins Experiential Learning Employer Excellence Award

OTTAWA – Algonquin College has won the Experiential Learning Employer Excellence Award from the Council for Experiential Learning (CEL).

Claude Brulé, Senior Vice President Academic, accepted the award on Monday night at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre. Algonquin’s nomination highlighted that the College offers “hands-on, digitally connected, experiential learning in more than 185 programs.”

The CEL established the Experiential Learning Employer Excellence Award in 2010 to recognize the many exemplary employers engaging with students across Ontario.

“Algonquin College is grounded in experiential learning and we are proud of our strong relationships with secondary schools in the region,” said Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen. “From co-op, job shadowing, and volunteer placements to job fairs, open houses, and campus visits, Algonquin provides hundreds of opportunities for high-school students in our community. Those connections lead many of these learners to take their first steps to postsecondary studies at our College and, eventually, to rewarding careers.”

The Council’s website explains why it launched the recognition. “Every time an employer provides a student with the opportunity to gain work-related knowledge, skills, and experience, they make an incalculable positive contribution to the quality of a young person’s life and career prospects.”

The CEL is a volunteer body with members from the private, public and voluntary sectors. It was created to foster experiential learning connections, recognize businesses with experiential learning awards, and advise government. The work of the CEL is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
