Algonquin College will receive more than $9 million in funding from the Ontario government to improve its energy efficiency.

OTTAWA — Algonquin College will receive more than $9 million in funding from the Ontario government to improve its energy efficiency.

The funding was announced today by members of the Ottawa Liberal Caucus who came to the College Friday for a ceremony to mark the event, including Ottawa West-Nepean Liberal MPP Bob Chiarelli, the provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Ottawa Centre MPP and Government House Leader Yasir Naqvi, Ottawa Vanier MPP and Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Nathalie Des Rosiers, and Ottawa South MPP John Fraser.

President Cheryl Jensen welcomed the funding, saying the College “is making sustainability and the environment a priority” with a goal of becoming carbon neutral.

“This funding will allow us to accelerate our efforts in these areas, and to continue leading the way in education, research and environmentally sustainable practices.”

Algonquin was one of four Ottawa postsecondary institutions to receive funding. Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and La Cité Collégiale will, with the College, receive nearly $34 million in grants and interest-free loans to undertake repairs and retrofits that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower carbon footprints. The funding is part of a wider initiative by the province to invest $514 million in Ontario’s colleges and universities through the Greenhouse Gas Campus Retrofit Program.

Algonquin College plans to use the funds in part to pay for the installation of solar panels on several buildings on the Ottawa campus, as well as the development of a power storage system.
