Two Algonquin College Employees Recognized For Innovation And Leadership

OTTAWA — Two Algonquin College employees, both innovators in their fields, have been recognized with Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) awards.

Kevin Holmes, Manager of the College’s Health and Wellness Research Centre, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Silver Leadership Excellence award for managerial staff, while Patti Church, the facilitator for the College’s summer intensive entrepreneurship program (SUMMIT), has received the Bronze Leadership Excellence award for non-managerial staff.

“I want to congratulate Kevin and Patti for this phenomenal achievement”, said President Cheryl Jensen. “They enrich our College community, bringing fresh thinking, new ideas, and an entrepreneurial spirit to their work. Patti and Kevin are true leaders, and highly deserving of this recognition.”

Holmes was recognized for the many local partnerships he helped to create at Algonquin College, including #FlashForward – an after-school program which brings together high school students and post-secondary mentors to create safety videos for use at The Ottawa Hospital. Holmes also played a key role in two other projects with The Ottawa Hospital – the massively popular Immunity Warriors interactive digital comic book, and the Smart Moms mobile application which facilitates optimal gestational weight gains. Additionally, Holmes has championed the “Best Gift Ever” campaign at the College, prompting many students and employees to register as organ donors.

Church was celebrated for her effort in designing, programming, and launching the SUMMIT program – an annual bootcamp for up to 20 students which prepares these learners to launch their own businesses or refine their business ideas. Church also played a key role in launching the College’s employee portal, championing a new smartboard technology at the College, and leading a cross-departmental team to apply for an eCampus Ontario research project. She has built a reputation as an organizer from large initiatives like SUMMIT, to a now-annual “5 Days of Kindness” campaign which coincides with the week before exams.

All CICan award winners were announced during the Colleges and Institutes 2017 Conference at the Shaw Centre today.
