OTTAWA — Algonquin College is pleased to announce that it is now home to a Steinway grand piano that will bring the gift of music to generations of new musicians.
The piano, a legacy gift from the CBC in honour of the College’s 50th anniversary, will be officially welcomed to the College at an intimate reception this evening in its permanent new home in the Music Industry Arts program in the School of Media, Arts and Design. The program prepares students to work as producers, engineers and professionals in the music industry.
“This Steinway piano is one of a kind and we are so grateful to CBC for this generous donation,” said Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen. “Not only does it give our Music Industry Arts program a wonderful new tool, but it also gives our students the opportunity to play one of the best instruments in the world.”
The piano, which was previously located at the CBC studios downtown, has been played by Lynn Miles, Royal Wood and Angela Hewitt along with dozens of others.
“CBC is committed to bringing Canadians together around community and local cultural experiences,” said Kelly Dexter, Senior Manager of Resources at CBC Ottawa. “It’s our hope that the Steinway piano will connect and inspire students and faculty at Algonquin College for decades to come.”
