Algonquin College Theatre Arts Season 2015

Theatre Arts 2015

The Theatre Arts Program at Algonquin College is pleased to announce the 2015 season.

February 11 to 15 The School For Lies by David Ives

Directed by Catriona Leger, Costumes by Vanessa Imeson, Set by John Doucet, Lights by David Magladry

This saucy comedy based on Molière’s The Misanthrope is a sure-fire great start to the season:

The School for Lies is a rollicking, irreverent, contemporary take on a classic tale – a story in which everyone who lies to save their social status has their world turned upside down when a curmudgeonly advocate for the truth comes to town. Little does he realize, he’s about to fall in love with the biggest liar of them all. “Mr. Ives has done the seemingly impossible: He has taken a beloved masterpiece of Western theater and created a parallel version which, though unmistakably based on the original, is both wholly personal in tone and similarly dazzling in effect.” —Washington Post. Leger’s distinct directorial touch promises to make this show a night out to remember.

March 11 to 15 TOUGH! By George F. Walker

Directed by Mary Ellis, Set by Attila Clemann, Costumes by Amanda Logan and Liam Gosson, Lights by David Magladry

Award winning director Mary Ellis is back with another George F. Walker hit! This three-hander is alternately darkly funny and touching. Tina summons her 19-year-old boyfriend Bobby to a tattered park. She’s got something to tell him and she’s brought her tough-talking pal Jill along as backup. Bobby doesn’t know what he’s walking into. He plans to break up with Tina because he wants to mess around with other women. But the stakes quickly skyrocket. “The combination of blunt honesty and emotional extremity combusts in comic shock.” –The Georgia Straight.

April 15 to 19 The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon by Don Zolidis

Directed by Teri Loretto-Valentik, Costumes by Judith DeBoer, Lights by David Magladry

Two narrators attempt to recreate all 209 of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in a wild, fast-paced extravaganza. To make it more difficult, they attempt to combine them into one gigantic fable using Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and other more obscure stories like Lean Lisa and The Devil’s Grandmother. Things are going to get a little crazy on the Algonquin stage this season. Need we say more?
