Frequently Asked Questions

What is required to apply to the Interdisciplinary Studies in Human-Centred Design program?
The strength of this program is in the diversity of the cohorts. Applicants from all academic and professional disciplines are eligible to apply, and will be considered based on the unique strengths they bring to the collaborative practicum. Admission requirements are an Ontario College Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Degree or equivalent.

How will this program boost my previous post-secondary education?
Design research and strategy is an interdisciplinary practice. Students combine previous post-secondary education and experience with the skills and knowledge of their peers to examine problems from a human-centred perspective. The theories, methods, and practices developed in this program compliment prior learning and experience for students interested in pursuing careers in a wide range of human-centred disciplines, such as user experience (UX) and customer experience (CX) research and design, service design, interaction design (IxD), information architecture (IA), systems design, and content strategy.

What types of courses will this program offer?
Students will gain a balance of research and design theory, methodology, and practice to develop strategic direction for systems, products, policies, and services. Theoretical courses will consider the concepts and contexts of human-centred design, and methodology courses will examine the tools and processes used to model and analyze human experience. Students will apply knowledge from all courses to their practicum—a collaborative, studio-based industry project

Do I need to buy any textbooks?
There are no textbooks, but students will be expected to purchase academic and industry literature to support their studies.

What will I need for my program start in Fall 2020?
The Human-Centred Design program uses predominantly cloud-based, collaborative software. You may supply either a Mac or Windows laptop. It is highly recommended you purchase as much RAM as possible, and that the size of your display is no less than 15 inches. Netbooks, tablets, or mobile devices are not acceptable as laptop substitutes.

Headphones and an ergonomic mouse are recommended for studio work.

You must be experienced with the operating system you select, and it is your responsibility to maintain your hardware and software in proper working order.

Please consult your Mac or Windows retailer for the latest laptop specifications.
