AC Friends Bid Farewell to Long-time Friend, Brenda Ghattas!
Practice Random Acts of Kindness This Holiday Season
by Catherine Lee
This is a special time of year when families gather together, friends share meals and fellowship, and people reach out to those far and near who are on our minds. It is a busy time of year full of concerts, fundraisers, office parties, religious celebrations, choosing special gifts, sparkling eyes of anticipation from the young ones, and so much more.
In these end-of-year celebrations, it is also important to take some time and give some thought to others. Others who may not have any family to share with, who are too far away to be with family, and who for many reasons will be alone during this festive time of year when others are so busy.
Please follow your heart and perhaps some of these simple suggestions to bring a smile of some joy to someone else. There are so many small things that can have a big impact on someone’s day or season. Please consider Random Acts of Kindness and spread some love to others.
Happy Holidays to Everyone!
- Donate your old professional clothes to an organization, like Dress for Success (org), that helps women jump-start their careers — and up their confidence.
- Carry someone’s groceries for them.
- Smile and make eye contact with someone on campus that you do not know, especially someone who could be overlooked.
- Bake bread or cookies and deliver the food to the Student’s Association or to a nearby fire station or group home.
- Be the bigger person and give someone else the parking space.
- Leave a copy of a book you love, with a note for the next reader, on the train or the bus.
- On garbage day, wheel your neighbor’s can out to the curb.
- Put some money in someone’s parking meter.
- If you are in a long line, invite the person behind you to go first.
- Call an old friend and reconnect.
- Clean the snow off someone else’s car and leave a candycane on the window.
- Leave a bouquet at the hospital — the nurses will know who needs it the most.
- Praise an employee to a manager or on a comment card — a little recognition goes a long way.
- Pay for a coffee for the next person in line.
- Send someone a handwritten letter or postcard.
- Give someone a book you think they’d like
- Give someone a hug.
- Go out of the way to offer someone a ride, especially on a bad weather day.
- Leave a positive sticky note on someone’s desk.
- Take someone out for lunch.
- Lend out your umbrella when it’s pouring outside.
- Make two lunches for work and give one away.
- Give someone a compliment.
- Give up your seat on the bus or subway.
- Help someone struggling with heavy bags.
