The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a two-level foundation program that prepares students for entry into and success in AC-Kuwait’s diploma programs. Our IEP program helps students develop the English language, English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP), mathematical, and information technology skills they need to be successful at the diploma level. Each level in the IEP program offers students 22 hours of instruction per week and is comprised of the following courses:

  • Academic Reading Skills
  • Guided Reading/Extensive Reading
  • Writing Skills
  • Listening and Speaking Skills
  • English for Specific Purposes (ESF)
  • Intermediate/ Advanced Grammar Courses
  • Math Foundations

The IEP program features small groups of students working independently, in pairs and in groups to maximize their understanding of the concepts covered in class. In the classroom, students are engaged in activities designed to increase their skills in English language, critical thinking, and collaboration and thereby facilitate a smoother transition into college life. They also have access to extra support to improve their English language proficiency and their Math skills through the College’s Writing and Math Help Centres. Using their own laptops, students work at their own pace to develop speaking, writing, reading, and listening competency.

The IEP program runs throughout the academic year in two 330-hour semesters. Students may join at the beginning of any semester.

Classroom activities engage students in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace, and academic contexts. Listening skills follow before, during, and after listening which give students the tools necessary to master listening skills for a variety of contexts. Speaking activities allow students to examine and practice specific components of Grammar and language functions. This enables them to sharpen their speaking skills. The listening and speaking course focus on the introduction of survival speaking skills, the development of basic listening comprehension, and the building of spoken vocabulary to prepare students to enter the third level of the Intensive English Program with the basic communication skills needed for campus and community interactions. The course also prepares them for academic challenges in the real world. The students are given useful insights into the presentation and oral communication skills. Additionally, they are provided support in computer literacy to prepare them for diploma programs.

The focus is not on accuracy or the level of difficulty but on reading fluency to make them proficient readers.

This is a listening, speaking skills course for foundation students in level III. This course aims to teach students to think critically and communicate effectively to succeed in their diploma courses. In this course, students practice listening to authentic academic lectures, short oral presentations, TED Talks, and participate in debates, presentations, and class discussions. Students develop note-taking techniques and strengthen critical thinking skills that include reconstructing and summarizing main ideas as well as transferring knowledge from lectures to other areas. Additionally, the course emphasizes oral communication skills through an understanding of strategies and knowledge of effective discourse as well as provides direction for students to plan, organize and deliver effective presentations. The student refines the public-speaking skills introduced and developed in Semester I in level 3. In this course, students practice listening to authentic academic lectures, short oral presentations, TED Talks, and participate in debates, and class discussions. Students learn a range of academic life skills.
