Most Up-to-Date Information
For the most up-to-date information about Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), please refer to the IRCC web site at: canada.ca/immigration or call them at 1-888-242-2100.
It is the international student’s responsibility to know the rules and regulations that apply. See the conditions of a study permit holder here.
Temporary Resident Visa (TVR)
A TRV is an official counterfoil/sticker document issued by a visa office that is placed in a person’s passport to show that they have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident (either as a visitor, a student, or a worker). Holding a TRV does not guarantee entry to Canada. The TRV is used for entry purposes ONLY.
Example of a TRV (Sticker/counterfoil in your passport):
Do not leave Canada without knowing if you need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to re-enter Canada. Find out if you need a TRV or an eTA here.
Usually, if you require a TRV, your initial TRV is issued with the same expiry date as your initial study permit and/or work permit if you applied before coming to Canada. If you are in Canada and in the process of extending your study permit, you should wait until you receive the new study permit before applying for a new TRV as the applications are not processed at the same time or at the same location. Also, the TRV can expire while you are in Canada. The TRV does not represent your status in Canada – your study permit, work permit or visitor record does. Be sure to keep your study permit, work permit or visitor record up to date! The TRV is required when you enter Canada.
How to Apply Online
The IEC recommends that you use Internet Explorer if using a PC or Safari for MAC:
- Step 1: Create or sign in to your IRCC Secure Account here.
- Step 2: Choose the study or work option and answer the questions to get to the application and documents required.
- Step 3: Upload the required documents, pay with a credit card and submit your application. You will receive a confirmation email from IRCC letting you know that they have received your application.
Documents from Algonquin College that you will require to support your TRV application:
- Transcript (grades): You can include an unofficial transcript from your ACSIS account to support your TRV application. Download your unofficial transcript on ACSIS by right clicking on the transcript page and save the document as a PDF.
- Letter of Enrolment Letter: You can print your own letter of enrolment from your ACSIS account. Choose the “print letter” option in ACSIS and choose your own expected graduation date.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Information about the eTA is found here.
Information includes: An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA.
With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada as often as you want for short stays (normally for up to six months at a time). You do not need an eTA for travel within Canada. An eTA doesn’t guarantee entry to Canada.
Find out if you require an eTA to travel to Canada here.
Biometrics
If you gave biometrics in the last 10 years for a visitor visa, work permit or study permit, and they’re still valid, you don’t have to give them again if you’re applying to visit, work or study. Find out more about who needs to provide biometrics, how often you need to provide biometrics, how much it costs, if there are any exceptions due to COVID-19, and more here.
