Study Plan Graphic Students can create a study plan that works for them, ranging from 4-18 months in length, depending on the combination of studies you choose. Options include English for Academic Purposes (EAP), upper level academic courses in a variety of academic fields, and a 4-month, full-time applied research course.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Students who do not meet the English entry requirements for academic study must first complete English for Academic Purposes (EAP) studies. A placement test will be required upon arrival to the college. This placement test will determine your EAP level.

The EAP International program offered at Algonquin College has 8 levels, 7 weeks in duration each. There are 2 Pre-EAP levels and 6 EAP levels. Students build the necessary English language skills to operate within professional and college environments through academic reading, writing, listening and speaking courses. Learning activities focus on active participation and critical thinking in academic and workplace contexts through in-class and lab activities.

Please note: Students registering in level 5 may have the option to take the course over a 4 month period, in conjunction with a maximum of 3 academic courses.

Academic

If students meet the admission requirements for direct entry into diploma or degree courses, they may take a maximum of 4 courses per academic term (4 months in length), for a maximum of two terms. An overview of Algonquin’s academic program offerings can be found below:

Applied Research Course

Upon completion of a minimum of 4 months of academic study, with a pass in all courses, students studying abroad at Algonquin College can take part in an applied research project with an industry partner. The work can involve market research, feasibility studies, prototype creation, and prototype testing or new products and processes. Students gain practical knowledge through hands-on experience on a project with clear commercial goals. Students develop skills that contribute to success in both educational and workplace environments. This includes the ability to manage stakeholder expectations, execution of applied research projects of significant complexity, teamwork and project management to oversee project resources.
