English Language Requirements

The language of instruction at Algonquin College is English. All students admitted to Algonquin College must meet a minimum level of English Language proficiency. There are multiple ways that this condition can be met. The primary way is through completion of a Standardized English test, such as the Academic IELTS, TOEFL, CAEL OR completion of the Algonquin College EAP program. You will be exempt from the Academic IELTS/TOEFL and EAP Program requirement if you meet any of the conditions on the list below.

  1. Completed one year of recognized, full-time post-secondary education (not language training) in English in an English-speaking country, with a C average. Some programs have a higher English requirement and there will be some exceptions. Please see below for a list of English-speaking countries.
  2. Completed secondary education in English in a country other than Canada where English is the principal language. See list below.
  3. Completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 U, M or C) issued by a Canadian school board.
  4. Successfully completed the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language & Composition or AP Literature & Composition; or completed the International Baccalaureate English A (higher-level or standard-level) or English B (higher-level or standard-level). Further information on grades awarded may be required.
  5. Graduated from an authorized Algonquin College ESL pathway program.
  6. Successfully completed the Algonquin College EAP program.
