November 2024 Information for 2025 Applicants

In November 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada made a number of policy changes that impact study permit holders inside Canada.

Algonquin College has created a series of tools to assist applicants to programs starting in Winter 2025 onwards who are already inside Canada to understand their study permit requirements and eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit after future studies, in light of the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announcement of a new field of study requirement.

Starting November 8, 2024, if you are changing post-secondary/Designated Learning Institutions (moving from another post-secondary institution to Algonquin College), you must apply for and obtain a new study permit naming Algonquin College before starting your studies.

You are not required to meet the field of study requirement. You remain eligible for a PGWP based on the original program printed on the new Letter of Acceptance in your Student Permit extension application. Any future program changes must be made to a PGWP-eligible program should you wish to remain PGWP eligible.

Study Permit Information

Starting November 8, 2024, if you are changing post-secondary Designated Learning Institutions (moving from another post-secondary institution to Algonquin College), you must apply for and obtain a  study permit extension before starting studies at your new DLI.

You must apply for and receive a study permit extension naming Algonquin College before you start studying at Algonquin College.

IMPORTANT! If you were accepted to Algonquin College for Winter (January) or Spring (May) 2025 semester, you can start studying at Algonquin College if you:

Have been accepted to Algonquin College for the Winter or Spring 2025 semester, and
Have applied for a study permit extension with a Letter of Acceptance from Algonquin College (or updated an existing study permit extension application by submitting your Algonquin College Letter of Acceptance in the IRCC web form), and
Have a current study permit that remains valid and that doesn’t have any DLI name printed on it, and
Meet all your existing study permit conditions

If you meet these criteria, you can attend Algonquin College while your study permit extension is being processed. Please indicate in your application portal that you are eligible to study in January 2025 and an international admissions officer will support you.

To be eligible for a PGWP after completing a program at Algonquin College, you must meet the field of study requirement by completing a PGWP-eligible program.
