SOCIAL CAUSES
Please take note that we have worked hard to make this a NO CHARGE (!) community event whereby all learning, refreshment breaks, and even a free lunch are covered by Cyber Security Days 2.0. Therefore, we cordially request that you bring either a non-perishable food item or make a monetary donation (any amount) to support this event’s important social causes:
The Algonquin College Student Association (SA) Food Cupboard (Collecting Days 1 & 2)
The Food Cupboard is a supportive service funded by the Algonquin Students’ Association and other community members, which recognizes the financial concerns of students and is here to make a difference. The Food Cupboard provides students who require the services with food and other basic necessities. http://www.algonquinsa.com/services/sa-services/food-cupboard/
The Syria Emergency Relief Fund (Collecting Day 1)
The ongoing conflict in Syria has triggered the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. According to the United Nations, 13.5 million people inside Syria need urgent help, including 6.5 million who are internally displaced. It is estimated that well over 250,000 people have died in the conflict, with hundreds of thousands more wounded. More than 4.5 million Syrians have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and in Europe. Canada is offering refuge to 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February 2016.
The Government of Canada has extended its one-for-one matching program until February 29, 2016.
Ottawa Bullying Prevention Coalition (Collecting Day 2)
Bullying is such a serious and complex issue, we as parents, educators, mental health experts and as a community need to move beyond awareness and focus on what can be done to address this issue effectively. The Ottawa Bullying Prevention Coalition is led by the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre and comprises partners including Ottawa Public Health, Ottawa Police Service, all four Ottawa school boards and CHEO.
