Sun Life Change in Life Provision
Changes in Employment and Personal Status may affect your benefit coverage. It is important for you to contact your Benefits Administrator to discuss your benefit coverage prior to the effective date of an employment status change or within 31 days following a personal status change.
You may change your Algonquin College – Human Resources Extended Health care, Vision, Hearing and Dental coverage from single to family or vice-versa under the following special circumstances:
- If there is a change in your marital status
- if you gain or lose a dependent
To change your coverage, you must notify the Human Resources Department within 31 days of when the change takes place.
Please note that in the event of a marriage breakdown resulting in divorce, your ex-spouse/partner is NO LONGER eligible for benefit coverage.
Retiree Special Circumstances
In certain circumstances Algonquin retirees may decline Sun Life coverage upon retiring because there is “spousal group coverage”. Should your spouse’s coverage cease and you wish to opt back into the Sun Life Benefit plan, you can, provided the following:
- You must provide written confirmation from your spouse’s employer that the coverage is no longer available to you and the date the coverage ceases.
- You will have 31 days from the date coverage terminates through the spouse’s group plan to pick up the coverage through the retiree plan at the college.
Additional Notes:
- No Health questionnaire is required on plan 22182.
- If the 31 day deadline is missed you may never have coverage through our plan.
- Should your spouse have access to retirement benefits through their employer and they opt not to take the coverage they cannot get coverage through our plan. In such a case there is no loss of coverage, they opt not to take the coverage and they may not come back for coverage under our retiree plan.
