TEDMED 2014

TEDMED_WH_CMYKTEDMED, a merge of the program name “TED” and the term “Medical”, is a community of progressive thinkers and leaders that provide the beginnings of innovative work in the fields of health and medicine. TEDMED 2014 is a series of 9 panels with over 75 speakers from the fields of science, journalism, education, business and technology; the focus of this year is “Unlocking Imagination in Service of Health and Medicine”. These speakers aim to get you thinking differently about their topics in health and medicine, as well as inspire you to take new and unprecedented approaches to your own problems and projects.

Algonquin College is streaming the entire event from September 10th to 12th in the AC Hub, on the 2nd floor of E Building (conveniently above the Starbucks.) You can also “attend” from your own computer, using the affiliate code L13781, although we highly encourage you to join at the Hub! The entire schedule can be found here.

Strawberries Anyone?

AC Employees

On June 20, 2014, over 100 College retirees came back to Algonquin to catch up with friends, make some new ones and enjoy seasonal strawberries at the second annual Retiree Strawberry Social. The event continues to grow with an increase of 40 retirees over the previous year.

Algonquin College President, Kent MacDonald, officially welcomed the retirees and thanked them for their years of service and commitment to Algonquin. President MacDonald said good bye after 16 years at Algonquin, the last two in the capacity of President. Mr. MacDonald leaves Algonquin College this summer to take on the new role of President and CEO of St. Francis Xavier University.

Shawn McCord, Alumni Affinity partner from Johnsons Inc., also provided a very informative presentation on travel insurance tips, which the retirees appreciated very much.

During the Strawberry Social event, Human Resources gathered contact information from several attendees to obtain feedback on the topic of the online presence of Retiree resources. Human Resources intends on reaching out shortly to the individuals on the list.

We could not post an update on the recent retiree event without acknowledging the passing of Wayne McIntyre who was so actively involved and committed to the retiree group at Algonquin. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Wayne – a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and volunteer. Wayne McIntyre has been a Professor in the School of Business at Algonquin College for 15 years and held administrative positions for another 13 years. Many wonderful words portray his kind nature, some of which can be viewed on his obituary guest book. May he rest in peace.
