Eligibility
Retiree Life Insurance
You and your eligible dependents may participate in the retiree life insurance benefits provided that you:
- Are covered for life insurance under the Colleges’ Group Insurance Benefits Plan immediately prior to your retirement date
- Qualify for and commence receiving a lifetime monthly pension from the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Pension Plan or the Teachers’ Pension Plan immediately upon your retirement
- Elect coverage within 31 days of your retirement date
Extended Health Care & Dental
You and your eligible dependents may participate in the extended health care and dental care benefits provided that you:
- Are covered for extended health care and dental benefits under the Colleges’ Group Insurance Benefits Plan immediately prior to your retirement date
- Qualify for and commence receiving a lifetime monthly pension from the College of Applied Arts and Technology Pension Plan or the Teachers’ Pension Plan immediately upon your retirement
- Elect coverage within 31 days of your retirement date
- Continuously maintain coverage under the Canadian medicare plan in your province or territory of residence
Eligible Dependents
Dependents include your spouse/partner, your unmarried children and your spouse’s/partner’s unmarried children (other than foster children) who are residents of Canada. The table below further outlines the definitions of each of these dependent groups:

- Spouse/partner by virtue of a legal marriage, or
- Partner of either sex in a relationship of some permanence, if you are the natural or adoptive parents of a child, or
- Cohabitants in a conjugal or homosexual relationship for over one year, or
- Partner who is publicly maintained and represented as your spouse continuously for over one year

Children |
- Unmarried and under 21 yrs living with you, or
- Unmarried and under 25 yrs, attending college or university full-time, and entirely dependent on you for financial support, or
- Unmarried and age 21 or over if mentally or physically handicapped (provided they became disabled prior to the limiting age, 21 or 25 if a full-time student), who is incapable of financial self-support and dependent on you for financial support
