Meet Makayla, Graduate, Medical Radiation Technology
“I chose this program as I’ve always been passionate about working in the medical field to help others. This program offered an opportunity to combine my desire to make a positive impact with hands-on, technical skills that directly contribute to patient care.
This program provided the perfect balance between hands-on clinical experience and theoretical learning. After three semesters of coursework, I felt fully prepared to take on the three-semester clinical placement.
One of the best highlights of my time in the program was the incredible people I met along the way—both instructors and classmates. The faculty was genuinely dedicated to our success, I always felt encouraged to ask questions and seek help when needed. The friendships I formed with my classmates were invaluable. We supported each other, learned together, and built lasting connections that I will carry with me throughout my life.
I had the incredible opportunity to train at the Level 1 trauma center in Eastern Ontario for my clinical placement, where I was challenged to grow and refine my skills. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone, ultimately giving me the confidence and practical expertise I needed to succeed in my career.
If you’re considering this program, be ready for a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. My biggest advice is to stay curious, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn—especially during your clinical placement. The support from instructors and classmates is so important, so lean on them and build strong connections.
I recently passed my CAMRT certification exam for radiological technology in January and I accepted a position at The Ottawa Hospital where I will be working as a Medical Radiation Technologist.
If I could describe my experience at Algonquin College in one word it would be: Empowering.”
