What are Dental Hygienists?
Dental Hygienists are self-regulated preventive specialists that apply the Dental Hygiene Process of Care to promote and maintain oral wellness. Graduates work with people of all ages, with varying degrees of oral care needs. Graduates possess a high level of interpersonal communication skills, and function in a number of roles, including clinician, educator, and researcher.

How long is the Dental Hygiene program?
This three-year accredited program consists of six semesters.

Who would do well in this program?
Responsible, mature, self-directed learners, who possess the ability to work both independently as well as a team member are likely to succeed. The applicant would be organized, computer literate, and have good verbal and written communication skills.

Are there any additional tests you have to take in order to qualify for admission to the Dental Hygiene program?
All applicants must complete the Algonquin College Health Program Admissions Test (AC-HPAT) through the Test Centre, for which a fee of $50.00 (subject to change) is charged.

How many people are accepted into the program each September?
Each fall, 48 students are enrolled in first semester.

Do you have to provide your own clients and/or find your own field placement activities?
No. Clients are provided by the program, and field placements are identified by the clinical coordinator.

Could you get a job in the field while you are in the program?

It is possible to work in the field if the student has a Dental Assistant background. Students are not able to work as a dental hygienist until they are registered by the provincial regulatory body.

What kinds of jobs are available when you graduate?
Graduates of the program may find employment in private dental offices, dental clinics, public health, hospitals, and education. They may also wish to set up their own practice or work with other health care professionals in wellness centers.

Is there anything else that you need to do before starting to practice?
All graduates must successfully write a national board exam and register with the regulatory body of the province that they wish to work in.

What is the average salary earned by graduates of the program?
The entry level hourly wage of a Dental Hygienist is approximately $30-32/hr.
