Please note that the below School of Media and Design awards and scholarships are not open to self-nomination.
Scholarships
Most scholarships have no application process. The selection is completed by Financial Aid and Student Awards in recognition of academic excellence.
Awards
Some awards have an application process. For those with an application, details on the application and submission deadline can be found in the Award description. The selection is completed by the Academic Departments in recognition of academic excellence and extracurricular activities, such as volunteerism and leadership.

School of Media and Design Award
Awarded to graduating students who have demonstrated achievement in leadership in program-related activities, application of learning outcomes for the benefit of others and excellence in reaching the learning outcomes of the program and applying the knowledge to higher levels.
Syntax Strategic Award
Awarded to two (2) students in their final year in any of the following Media and Design programs: Graphic Design, Digital Marketing Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. The Award is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons. Preference will be given to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC).
The Syntax Strategic Award is given to two (2) students ($5,000 each). The award recipients will also be offered a paid summer internship at Syntax Strategic.
To be considered for the Award, students who qualify must submit the following:

- A one-page essay on how they will apply the skills they developed in their program in the workforce, their career goals, and the steps they will take to achieve them.
- A portfolio of their work (2 samples)
- Two references: a teacher and one other (a personal reference, peer, employer, or volunteer lead)
The application period is from August 15 to October 15. Funds will be disbursed directly to the students in December. For more information, please contact studentawards@algonquincollege.com.

Advertising Marketing and Communications Management
Margaret Brown Byron Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the second or final year of the Advertising and Marketing Communications Management program who demonstrate passion, enthusiasm, and professionalism for their studies through class participation and/or program involvement. Students must indicate a desire to seek employment in the advertising/marketing communications field upon graduation.
Emdash Award
Awarded to indigenous students enrolled in second year of either the Public Relations, second year Journalism or third year of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program who has excelled in the program.
Ottawa Citizen Marketing Award of Excellence
Awarded to second-year students enrolled in the Advertising and Marketing Communications Management program showing the most promise in print advertising.
Animation
Mercury Award of Excellence
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Animation program who have shown professionalism in the field, a positive attitude, work well with others, and are good animators that continue to improve.
Silicon Graphics Award
Awarded to third-year students enrolled in the Animation program based on best traditional film, best digital film and honorable mentions.
Switch VFX & Animation Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Animation program who are team players, hard workers, and demonstrates initiative.
Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours)
ARIDO Norma Ruth Ridley Scholarship (External)
This award is presented to the winning students competing against all Interior Design programs in Ontario. The Program Coordinator may submit the name of one student to be considered for the scholarship. These students are tasked with an interior design challenge and are judged in five areas: academic achievement, professionalism, community involvement, character, and communication.
Burns Connor Scholarship
The Burns Connor Scholarship is awarded to a student entering the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of the Bachelor of Interior Design program with the highest GPA.
Doug Murray Art History Class Fund
Awarded annually towards the costs of an Art History field trip for students studying art history in the first year of the Bachelor of Applied Arts-Interior Design program. In any given year, should the annual Art History field trip not occur, the fund shall be awarded to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Arts – Interior Design who embody a spirit of inquiry, with a willingness to try new experiences. Students should demonstrate that they are currently learning a new skill i.e. A new language, a musical instrument, or a sport.
Jeney Wolchuck Award
Awarded to a graduating fourth-year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Arts-Interior Design program who is calm, trustworthy, and encouraging. The recipient personifies grace under pressure and brings the best out of others.
LWG Innovation in Workplace Design Award
The LWG Innovation in Workplace Design Award has been established to provide an award of $1,000 for one student in their fourth year of study in the Bachelor of Interior Design program with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the Ottawa campus. Selection of recipient for the Award is adjudicated by the Financial Aid and Student Awards office in conjunction with a faculty selection committee from the School of Media and Design.
MillerKnoll Modern Design Award
Awarded to a third (3rd) year student in the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) program who recognizes the importance of timeless design for the good of humankind.
The Award is open to Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, permanent residents, or protected persons.
The Award is open to students in any campus where the program is offered.
Broadcasting – Radio
Best Current Affairs Story Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Radio program for the best current affairs story.
Gary Neville Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to two students in their second year of studies, one in Broadcasting – Radio, one in Broadcasting – Television, who can demonstrate academic merit.
Mauler and Rush Broadcast – Radio Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Radio program who demonstrate a passion and talent for morning radio broadcasting (particular discipline of radio).
Rogers Broadcasting – Radio Scholarship
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Radio program with a high GPA and who demonstrate an ability to succeed. Provides second-year tuition to a first-year student.
Rogers Broadcasting – Radio Summer Internship
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Radio program with high academic achievement who are selected for the Rogers summer internship program.
Broadcasting – Television
Affinity Productions Editor of the Year Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program who clearly demonstrate a thorough understanding of linear and non-linear editing systems.
Blair H. Tetreault Memorial Award
Awarded to students entering the second year of the Broadcasting-Television program who, in the first year of the program, achieved a GPA of at least 3.6 and who contributed meaningfully to a sense of collegiality among fellow students, professors and others involved in the Broadcasting-Television Program. Specifically, the student demonstrates the following: is cooperative, caring, pleasant, strives to build consensus and is always ready to lend a helping hand.
Established by his family, the award is in loving memory of Blair H. Tetreault, who passed away in 2021. Blair graduated from the Broadcasting-Radio and Television Program of Algonquin College in 1981. Following work as an editor for various news and public affairs programs at the local Ottawa CTV affiliate, Blair transitioned to live sports broadcasting as an editor, tape operator, technical director, director and producer. He was a two-time Emmy Award winner. Blair was highly and warmly regarded for his technical expertise and collegiality.
CBC Producer of the Year Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program who best demonstrate the ability to coordinate and oversee all aspects of a production.
CTV Ottawa Award of Excellence – Director of the Year
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program with a high GPA and who best demonstrate the ability to create a well-paced, stylistic program in a variety of categories. Special consideration given to indigenous students.
CTV Ottawa Award of Excellence – Technical Director of the Year
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program with a high GPA and who demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of control room operation, including technical set-up procedures for multi-camera studio production. Special consideration given to indigenous students.

Awarded to two students in their second year of studies, one in Broadcasting – Radio, one in Broadcasting – Television, who can demonstrate academic merit.
Headline Sports Award – Graphic and Animation Artist of the Year
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program who clearly demonstrate an ability to compose 2D digital television graphics and proficiency in the use of 2D and 3D motion graphics software. Must also demonstrate an ability to format all television graphic file types and expertness in creating and rendering computer generated animation and effects.
Precision Transfer Technologies Director of Photography of the Year Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Broadcasting – Television program who demonstrate a good knowledge of camera technology, including Betacam, DVC Pro and DVCAM.
Film and Media Production
1Department Leadership in Film Award
Awarded to a graduating student enrolled in Film and Media Production program with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The successful candidate will be a positive ambassador for the Algonquin film program in and outside of the college, inspire others to work collaboratively and creatively, demonstrate leadership through kindness and respect, always models excellent safety practices on film sets, and selfless in their desire to help and support classmates.
Kevin Kocvar Editing Award
Awarded during the Spring term to students enrolled in their last term of the Film and Media Production program.

The Affinity Production Group Cinematography Award
The Affinity Production Group Cinematography Award is given to one (1) student in the Film and Media Production program who:
- reliably enhances a films story with composition and movement
- creates unique visual aesthetics by manipulating colour, light and shadow
- plans and executes film shoots with exceptional attention to detail, organization and respect
- follows and encourages safe film-set practices, and above all
- demonstrates a passion and desire to pursue the craft of cinematography.
The application is open from May 1, 2023 to June 15, 2023 at 11:59pm.

Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Graphic Design program who demonstrate academic and creative excellence and professionalism.
Illustration and Concept Art
Stuart Cranston Memorial Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Illustration and Concept Art program.
Interior Decorating
ARIDO EOC Scholarship
The ARIDO EOC Scholarship has been established for one student in their second year of study in the Bachelor of Interior Design Program with a minimum GPA of 3.6.
Journalism
Bell Media Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Journalism program during second year who has demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills and passion for learning.
Doug Nixon Environmental Journalism Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Journalism program who has produced an outstanding environment related story that reflects in-depth research, knowledge and writing ability.
Leo Valiquette Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a second-year student with the highest GPA (3.6+) in the Journalism program.
Mark Anderson Journalism Achievement Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Journalism program who have written an inspirational personal story linked to a broader societal issue.
Media Style Award
Awarded to indigenous students enrolled in second year of either the Public Relations, second year Journalism or third year of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program who has excelled in the program.
Melba Lent Woelflé Journalism Award
Awarded annually to students who have completed Level 02 of the Journalism program and who have demonstrated exceptional writing skills in their 1st year.
Ron de Vries Award of Excellence in Photojournalism
Awarded to students enrolled in their final term of the Journalism program who have demonstrated a passion and commitment to developing their skills in the field of photojournalism.
Music Industry
Field Service Canada Award for Leadership & Innovation
Awarded to a student in level 2 or 3 in the Music Industry Arts program with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who possesses great passion and commitment for the industry and demonstrates leadership in the classroom or the community.
Harry Bloomfield Scholarship
Awarded to Level 02 students enrolled in the Music Industry program who demonstrate academic excellence and contribute to the overall Algonquin College student experience.
Photography
ABCD (Above and Beyond Call of Duty) Student Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program for assisting or mentoring other students.
Adobe Imaging Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program with the best website.
Apple Canada Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program with the Best-in-Show Image at the Photography Exhibition.
Epson Digital Print Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program with the best creative poster.
Gunther Leonhardt Memorial Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program in recognition of their community work and contribution to the success of the program.
Henry’s Portfolio Award
Awarded to first-year students enrolled in the Photography program with the best portfolio.
James Zagon Memorial Photography Award
Awarded to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program who have a passion for a career in photography and also have volunteered in the community and/or Algonquin College.
Nikon Imaging Award
Awarded to students enrolled in the Photography program in recognition of best magazine cover.
Paul Grace Memorial Award
Awarded to a graduating student in the Photography program who demonstrates perseverance, dedication, exemplary attendance all through their studies, and who has overcome an academic path filled with challenges. Challenges were either but not limited to financial, health, balance work-study, parental responsibilities, etc.
Professor’s Cup
Awarded by faculty to graduating students enrolled in the Photography program who demonstrates the most significant improvements in academic and practical work during his/her studies at Algonquin College.
Public Relations
Media Style Award
Awarded to indigenous students enrolled in second year of either the Public Relations, second year Journalism or third year of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program who has excelled in the program.
Sarah Grantier Award
Awarded to second-year students enrolled in the Public Relations program who demonstrate strong written and verbal skills (good public speaker), are team players, and have the ability to bring out the best in people.
Scriptwriting
Tarzwell Scriptwriting Award
Awarded to domestic or international students enrolled in the Scriptwriting program who can demonstrate the following:
– Attending the annual Toronto Pitch Trip
– A minimum grade point average of 3.0
– Demonstrated commitment in reaching the learning outcomes of the Scriptwriting program
Todd Gardiner Award
Awarded to a student in the final semester of the Scriptwriting program with a minimum GPA of 3.0, who demonstrates a love of comedy and goes out of their way to make people laugh and bring them happiness.
Established in loving memory of Todd Gardiner, who passed away in 2017. Todd was an amazing man! He had such a creative mind that whatever he did inspired others. He applied to Algonquin College for the scriptwriting program because he wanted to write comedies to bring happiness to everyone. He had a sense of humor no-one could match. When you were around Todd you couldn’t help laughing.
People were drawn to Todd and when you met him you knew that you would not forget him. Todd brought people together with his sense of humor and creative mind. He brought his family and his school friends along with his hockey and college friends together. They have all remained friends to this day because of Todd. Always thinking of others Todd made sure others were looked after first. Todd lived life to the fullest even though it was a short one.
