Joyce Family Foundation Bursary

Eight renewable awards, valued at up to $5,000 each per year, will be awarded annually to students entering Year One of any two-, three-, or four-year program, in any Faculty. Each year, fifty percent (half) of the bursaries will be allocated to students in a two-year diploma program. To be considered, students must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person as well as a resident of Ontario who has graduated from high school in the Ottawa, Perth, or Pembroke area in the last three years and pursuing their first post-secondary program.

Selection will be based on a combination of demonstrated financial need, as determined by Algonquin College, as well as a reference letter from an individual who is aware of the student’s personal circumstances and can speak to their resilience in the face of adversity and potential for success in their post-secondary studies. Selected students must commit to working with a mentor throughout their studies. An application is required by March 31.

This fund is made possible by a generous donation from The Joyce Family Foundation, which is committed to providing access to education for youth who face significant financial barriers and have demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles and adversity.

Eligibility

The renewable entrance awards may be granted to students who are:

  • Full-time students entering Year One of any two-, three- or four-year program in any Faculty at Algonquin College
  • Entering their first post-secondary program
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons
  • Residents of Ontario, and have graduated from a high school in Ottawa, Perth, or Pembroke area within the last three years
  • In the greatest financial need and have overcome obstacles and adversity

Application and selection process

Bursary applicants must have applied for admission to Algonquin College at the time of applying for the bursary. Successful selected bursary recipients will be notified by late April. Selected bursary recipients must be admitted and accept their offer of admission by May 1. Recipients must follow all regular college policies and ensure they are registered full-time by the start of the fall term. The first installment of the bursary will be credited to the recipients’ accounts at the College following shortly after the start of the fall term.

Bursary renewal criteria

The $5000 bursary will be divided into two payments: one at the start of the fall term and one at the start of the winter term. Each payment will be made following confirmation of the recipient’s good academic standing and full-time enrolment.

In order to have their bursary renewed to the following year, bursary recipients must submit a brief report of their work with a mentor over the course of the year. Selected recipients will be provided instructions on how to submit this report.

Application Deadline: Monday, March 31, 2025, at 11:59pm

Selected recipients will be notified by email by April 30, 2025
