Hazardous and Bio-hazardous wastes FAQ

How to proceed:

  • Direct requests to the Facilities Management Service Desk at 7710@algonquincollege.com
  • Once your request for hazardous or bio-hazardous waste collection is received, we will send you a reminder with the step-by-step procedure.
  • The waste will be collected upon your confirmation that the waste to be disposed of is ready to be safely transported.

What you should not do:

  • Do not connect directly with any vendor to provide you with the service – instead, connect with 7710. The College has awarded vendors providing those services in compliance with the Algonquin requirements.
  • Do not accumulate hazardous waste for more than 3 months.
  • Do not dispose of waste in hallways, compound areas, drains or waste bins.
  • DO NOT follow any other procedure other than the one described in the How to Proceed section.

Sharps:

  • Departments are responsible for providing sharp containers to their areas if they find it necessary.
  • Facilities will provide specific cardboard boxes and their liners for the department to fill, and tape shut once the sharp containers are full.
  • The drop off of the cardboard boxes and their liners shall be arranged prior to the collection date at 7710@algonquincollege.com.
  • Departments are responsible for sealing the sharp containers inside the cardboard box + liner.
  • Each bag must be hand-tied by gathering and twisting the neck of the bag and using a tie or hand knot to secure the bag, and each container must be securely closed.
  • Closed bags must not be visible once a secondary container (box or reusable tub) is closed.
  • Reusable sharps containers should not be packaged in biomedical waste containers but rather placed on the racks for standard processing.

Waste:

  • The generators are responsible for packaging hazardous waste and filling out the Hazardous Waste Pick-up Form for collection and transport.
  • Hazardous waste that is improperly packaged and or does not accompany a properly filled form, and or that imposes risk to the Facilities Management staff will be denied pick up until the issue is corrected.
