Career Counselling

Career counselling is a client-centered approach that recognizes career decisions are deeply connected with many factors in a person’s life, such as identity, values and life circumstances. Career counsellors help with identifying and navigating these factors to help with decision making and planning that is best for the client.

How We Can Help

Creating a career isn’t one choice – it’s a series of many choices made throughout your education and work life. People seek career counselling for a wide range of issues. Our team of trained professionals can help if you are:

  • Questioning your program choice
  • Uncertain about your career goals
  • In jeopardy of failing your program
  • Thinking about switching programs
  • Not sure which program will lead to a career you want
  • Wanting to explore further education
  • Confused about labour market information

Access Career Counselling

Current and Recent Students

Full career counselling services are available only to students who have been enrolled in a course of 24 hours or more within the previous four months. To meet with a Counsellor, please contact the Welcome Centre by calling 613.727.4723 ext. 7200, or by emailing welcomecentre@algonquincollege.com. The Student Learning Centre also offers Career Chat workshops for current students to explore their career options. 

Note: While we assist with career planning and program choice, we do not provide services such as program or course changes, timetable changes, class exemptions, withdrawals, financial aid, etc. For these services, please contact the Registrar’s Office.

Future Students

A 30-minute information session with a Prospective Student Advisor is available to individuals who are considering enrolling in a program or course at Algonquin College and would like assistance selecting an option. To book an appointment, please click here.

Career Assessments

There are hundreds of questionnaires and assessments designed to help you identify suitable career options based on your interests, values, or personality type. The Counselling Services team is trained to choose the best career assessment tools to meet your needs and help you make effective use of the results.

A typical career assessment includes several tools that tap into several aspects of your personality and interests, to produce an accurate picture of your career preferences. This process usually unfolds over three or four meetings with a counsellor. Counselling Services offers career assessments free of charge.
