Statistics Canada Hackathon CANDEV Comes to Ottawa

When: October 20-21 at uOttawa.

Do you want to show off your skills at a 24 hour intensive hackathon? Statistics Canada is introducing the new nation-wide initiative ‘CANDEV’, a Data Challenge with Ottawa being its first stop. Starting October 20 at the University of Ottawa, postsecondary students will engage in an exhilarating 24 hours of work on user stories or business cases provided by their public sector partners.

CANDEV will include diverse scenarios which may include anything from establishing new processes, acquiring transactional data, creating a cloud-based working space, to developing a statistical dashboard about a student theme. Conveniently taking place over a weekend, the event enables students to showcase their capabilities as they tackle real-life challenges and scenarios, and have an opportunity to be recruited and develop new partnerships. This event is open to all university or college students who are 18 years of age or older, the only requirement is that you need to have an interest in programming or problem solving!

“This series of challenges is also exceptional for those who want to develop their programming or problem-solving skills with real Government of Canada work challenges. In addition, the winning teams may be invited to present their solutions to the Government of Canada Data Conference.”

Statistics Canada’s CANDEV Data Challenge will have many partners there for you to show your skills to and connect with, including:

  • Employment and Social Development Canada
  • Shared Services Canada
  • Canada Revenue Agency
  • Finance Canada
  • Public Service Commission
  • Public Health Agency of Canada
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada
  • Canadian Food Inspection Agency
  • Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada
  • Indigenous Services Canada
  • Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

So, you want to attend to be in close proximity with these contacts, but you don’t know how to code. That’s okay! You can still attend, as everyone has expertise that could be valuable for the Data Challenge.

Did we mention you’ll be provided meals as well as snacks and beverages throughout the event? Need we say more?!
