“Canada Day weekend is usually our kick off to summer, so the hotel is quite busy,” says Hannah Gowland, Recruitment Coordinator at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. “it is an event that is held around the lake for our guests and day visitors to enjoy… and it is when many of the day visitors start to come daily.”

On top of our students’ regular preparations for the normal amount of guests that the hotel would expect, a considerable amount of extra work has had to be put in to account for the influx of guests that will be staying there during the Canada Day long weekend. They have been involved, in their respective departments, in the planning and preparation of getting every aspect of the hotel ready.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to work at such a prestigious hotel, one that Algonquin College is proud to partner with,” says David Hall, Manager (acting), Algonquin College Co-op. “Working on one of the hospitality industry’s most important days of the year is an extremely valuable learning experience for our co-op students.”

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise currently boasts 6 full-service restaurants, and our co-op students who are members of restaurant operations, one being Emily McCaffrey, who is a Jr. Server and helps maintain the Poppy Brasserie, the hotel’s breakfast restaurant. “This has been an incredible experience for me so far,” says McCaffrey. “I’m definitely going to be looking into coming back here to do my next work term as well.”

She, along with the rest of the staff, have been busy getting everything prepped and prepared for the holiday rush, including getting ready to serve a gigantic Canadian-themed cake on Canada Day, of the hotel’s annual Canada Day activities. The hotel plans a variety of complimentary activities that guests are able to participate in, ranging from a polar bear dip (Lake Louise is glacier-fed), to the cake-cutting ceremony.
