First Moon, First People: Colonization Road – Q&A with Director

First Moon, First People Indigenous Culture Celebration: In collaboration with the Circle of Turtle Lodge, we have a number of activities and initiatives scheduled for the month of January to celebrate Indigenous culture and to explore the Truth and Reconciliation of Canada Calls to Action. Join in and learn.

Join us for a question and answer session with the director of Colonization Road, Michelle St. John. St. John is a Canadian actress, singer, producer and director who has been involved in creative projects in theatre, film, television and music since the 1980s. Her directorial debut, Colonization Road, is a 2016 feature-length documentary that premiered at imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.

This event is open to all students and employees. No need to register.

These activities are part of the First Moon, First Person Celebration in partnership with the Circle of Turtle Lodge.

These sessions speak to the following Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action:

14. We call upon the federal government to enact an Aboriginal Languages Act that incorporates the following principles:

i. Aboriginal languages are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture and society, and there is an urgency to preserve them.

iv. The preservation, revitalization, and strengthening of Aboriginal languages and cultures are best managed by Aboriginal people and communities.

63. We call upon the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada to maintain an annual commitment to Aboriginal education issues, including:

iii. Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect
