Explore the Outdoors and find the City’s Hidden Gems

If you’re looking to explore the outdoors this summer, come to the session on responsible, connected hiking hosted by Girl Gone Good’s Victoria Walsh, which is running as part of the College’s virtual Summer Market on Thursday, July 15.

“With the pandemic, you realize how much we have here,” says Walsh, who has spent many years exploring the trails around Ottawa. “It would take me another five years to hike everything in Ottawa. There’s just that many good trails.”

Walsh is a military veteran and full-time IT consultant who recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Algonquin College, which she may or may not use to go into mental health nursing one day. She is also the founder of Girl Gone Good, a company dedicated to encouraging physical and mental wellness through a safe and responsible connection to nature formed via activities such as hiking.

Girl Gone Good’s website, which is augmented by the @girlgonegood and @littlehikersclub Instagram accounts (the latter dedicated to kids’ exploration of nature) and two books , feature trail guides, trail finders, hiking resources, and outdoor-themed merchandise, the proceeds of which go to two charities, Boots on the Ground (24/7 peer-to-peer support for Ontario EMS) and the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust.

Walsh started the Girl Gone Good website 10 years ago as a way to share her travels. It slowly evolved into a hiking and health website. She describes herself as a “frequent flyer,” and through independent travel and four deployments over 14 years in the military, she has visited over 40 countries.
