Students – Participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup!
Posted on Wednesday, September 12th, 2018
In celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Ocean Wise and WWF-Canada are leading four cleanups from coast to coast. Make an impact in your community by participating in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at Petrie Island on September 15! Volunteers will meet at the College and transportation will be provided to Petrie Island.
This cleanup is organized as a part of Living Planet @ Campus, a national program from World Wildlife Fund Canada that was piloted at Algonquin College, and is expanding to college and university campuses across the country.
Petrie Island was chosen as the location for the following reasons:
- It is an ecologically important wetland (designated Class 1 wetland in Ontario).
- It is home to many species, including nesting turtles, that can be harmed by litter.
- Volunteers at the cleanup will also have the option of participating in two conservation activities, including removing invasive species and wrapping trees for beaver protection.
The event is rain or shine so please dress for the weather. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. Fruits and snacks will be provided.
