Student Life: Get the Most Out of Algonquin College

When you think about your future college life, you probably focus on what program you should take, and what what kind of academic load you can handle. But there’s a whole other side to the college experience outside of academics, and it can be just as important as picking the right classes.

Getting involved on campus in different ways can help you meet people, make friends, form connections for your future career, and give you memories to last a lifetime. At Algonquin College, we have several ways to help you get involved.

The AC Hub: Expand Your Experiences

Your first stop on your way to becoming more connected on campus should be the AC Hub. Located on the second floor of the Student Commons, this open, modern space is designed for collaboration. The AC Hub is not only a place to work independently or with a group for a class project, but it is also a way to broaden your knowledge and expand your social circle by attending AC Hub “talks” and other social events.

Can’t make it to the main AC Hub? There’s a satellite location on the second floor of the ACCE Building, and three mobile desks that change locations around campus to give students information on events and services.

The AC Hub wants to help students expand their college experience beyond the classroom and aid them in making connections that will benefit them after their time at Algonquin College is over.

Volunteering: Make a Difference in Your Community

Most first-year students enter college with at least some volunteering experience since these opportunities are readily available in high school. Remember, volunteering can help you learn more about yourself and even put you on a path to your future career. Volunteer work lets you build your network and obtain experience in your field, all while making a difference in your community.

One of the easiest ways to get involved with volunteering at Algonquin is through Community Projects. This initiative between the AC Hub’s Volunteer Centre and not-for-profit organizations across Ottawa gives students the opportunity to donate their time and give back in a variety of ways. (At Algonquin, we encourage students to be active citizens who are engaged not just with their school, but also with the city around them.) Community Projects are offered multiple times a month on different days and times, so you can find something that fits your schedule. There are a range of volunteer activities to choose from – everything from the Ottawa Food Bank to Habitat for Humanity to Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary. Transportation is provided and you work alongside other student volunteers from Algonquin, making it a safe and engaging way to get involved and meet people from a variety of programs (even if you’re shy!).

Co-Curricular Record: Focus on the Future

Don’t be confused by the name – Co-Curricular Record.

As you start to get involved and build a list of volunteer experiences, you will want to keep a record of your participation and accomplishments. As a student at Algonquin College, you have access to the Co-Curricular Record, a tool provided by the AC Hub.

The Co-Curricular Record provides a place to catalog and verify your AC leadership and volunteer experiences, so when it comes time to apply for a job or a graduate program, you have an official transcript that recognizes these experiences to add to your career portfolio.
