Remembrance Day Ceremonies: November 11, 2020

Lest We Forget’ Project
View the Lest We Forget 2020 presentation slide show to honour the memory of veterans from any conflict who are related to friends of employees and students at the College.

Ottawa Campus:
On-Campus:
For those students and staff who will be on campus at the time of the event (11:00 am), we ask faculty to break and observe a moment of silence. Additionally, there will be messaging on the digital screens at approximately 10:55 am asking for a moment of silence at 11:00 am. For those students/staff at the Ottawa campus, the screens in the marketplace will be tuned into the national ceremony for viewing, however, we will not be advertising a “gathering” as we are continuing to follow public health protocols.

Off-Campus:
Employees and students will be encouraged to watch the Ottawa National Remembrance Day Ceremony live: https://www.legion.ca/remembrance/remembrance-day/the-national-ceremony

Wreaths:
For the first time, The Royal Canadian Legion has given the public the opportunity to purchase a wreath for the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial. Algonquin College has purchased four wreaths, to symbolize the wreaths we would have dedicated/laid at our traditional on-campus event:

1st wreath: on behalf of College Employees
2nd wreath: on behalf of Family and Friends
3rd wreath: on behalf of Algonquin Students
4th wreath: honouring Aboriginal Veterans, their families, and their communities.

Perth Campus:
Perth campus will be live streaming the local Perth ceremony in the student commons, sharing virtual ceremony information with students, and asking all faculty teaching at 11 am to allow a moment of silence. Employees and students off campus are encouraged to watch the Ottawa National Remembrance Day Ceremony live:

Live Streaming Protocols:
Both Perth and Ottawa will live stream the ceremony in their common spaces for on-campus students to view. Extra signage will be up to remind students to keep a social distance and to not gather in groups. Students will also have access to the live stream via Brightspace if they wish to watch it on their own. Employees will also be present in the common spaces to ensure students do not gather.

Pembroke Campus:
The Pembroke Campus is located near one of Canada’s largest military bases in Garrison Petawawa. The campus has many military connections through its students and employees and will provide a full virtual Remembrance Day ceremony that will feature special video messages and a virtual wreath laying in remembrance of those who have perished during times of war.

Will be hosting a virtual webinar service from 10:45 – 11:10 a.m.
