Pinning Ceremony celebrates Practical Nursing graduates
Posted on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023
More than 100 graduates from the Practical Nursing program were recognized at a pinning ceremony on Thursday, June 1 at the Algonquin Commons Theatre on the Ottawa Campus. During the ceremony, a special pin is affixed to the graduate’s clothing by a fellow practicing nurse, symbolizing their professional entrance into the nursing field.
A reception preceded the ceremony where students and their families gathered to mingle and sample various canapés on offer. Algonquin College President and CEO Claude Brulé was on hand to take part in photos with students in front of a practical nursing backdrop.
Once guests were seated inside the theatre, the student procession began with graduates taking their seats in front of the stage. Master of ceremonies and Nursing Studies Professor Anna Don welcomed graduates and their families before Nursing Chair Carmen Hust led the land acknowledgement and gave a brief history of the pinning ceremony. Brulé then welcomed graduates with remarks and best wishes for their careers ahead.
After receiving their pins, the graduates stood to recite the Nightingale Pledge. Named after the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, the Nightingale Pledge is an oath nurses take to uphold the ethical standards and principles of the nursing profession.
The College sends its sincere congratulations to these Practical Nursing graduates and wishes them all the best in their future careers.
