Runaway Picnic Pop-up Offers Designer-Curated Escape

During the height of the pandemic, with travel restrictions and isolation getting people down, one Algonquin College alumna thought how wonderful it would be to run away for a picnic – and not just any picnic.

Think of fine cutlery, china and crystal set atop a linen-clad table adorned with cushions and set in a park, on the beach or in a quiet forest clearing. The food and drink would be whatever your appetite desires, produced locally by chefs from across the city. Read more >

Dig In to the Ottawa Food Scene

Feeling peckish? Looking for new places to #eatlocal? Stop by the Summer Market on July 15 to hear from Melissa Mui, an Algonquin College Nursing grad and founder of Mel’s Hangry Table, as she virtually takes us to her top five favourite restaurants in Ottawa.

We recently chatted with Mel, a cuisine and lifestyle blogger, about the Ottawa food scene and some of her favourite places to eat and foods to try.

“The Ottawa food scene is growing,” said Mui. “A lot of new things I see in Toronto in Montreal are now coming to Ottawa, which is great.” This includes fusion dishes like Korean cheese corn dogs, rolled ice cream and different takes on shawarmas and poutines. “People are expanding their palates,” said Mui. Algonquin College announces new Weston Family Scholars!

The Weston Family Foundation Skilled Trades Initiative is helping keep pace with the demand for a skilled trades’ workforce by increasing the number of highly skilled professional leaders with Red Seal certifications. The primary goal remains to target, recruit and retain participating students who will become employed in one of the construction, manufacturing and transportation sectors, broaden students’ perspectives, and motivate them to effect change in their home communities. This program helps to position today’s young leaders for national and international success.

Algonquin College has awarded the Weston Family Scholarship in the Skilled Trades to a total of 137 students in manufacturing, transportation and construction programs, including 33 Weston Family Alumni. Read more >
