Orange Shirt Day at Algonquin

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake in the spring of 2013.

It grew out of a residential school survivor’s account of losing her shiny, new orange shirt on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.


As Sept. 30 occurs on a Sunday this year, Algonquin College has organized a brief event on Monday, Oct. 1 to promote awareness of this national campaign. The AC community is welcomed from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m in our new Indigenous Commons in the DARE District. In support of the cause, we will also be distributing t-shirts to staff and learners on a first come, first served basis, to wear as a show of their support for the day.

Building on our commitments to Truth and Reconciliation here at Algonquin, we want to acknowledge many of the collaborative efforts from national organizations such as Orange Shirt Day, Sisters in Spirit and the Moosehide Campaign, which are highlighted in events on campus and around Ottawa throughout the month of October.

We hope to see you at some of these events in the spirit of mamawi, moving forward together.
