Discover the Essential Study Skills
Posted on Friday, January 22nd, 2016
The beginning of the new semester is a good time for a fresh start. In the past, did you feel overwhelmed and stressed out by school? Did you have a hard time getting things done on time, or do poorly on a few big tests? If any of these problems sound familiar, you need to check out Student Support Services’ Essential Study Skills website. This easy-to-navigate portal includes tips, videos, activities, and tools to help you achieve academic success.
This service is a collaborative project from Counselling Services, the Centre for Students with Disabilities, Health Services, and the Library. These departments deal directly with students and the issues they face, and the content reflects these insights and offers solutions. The site currently includes the following units:
Time Management
The Time Management unit offers strategies to beat procrastination and plan your time for each week, semester, and assignment. It also includes templates for creating your own weekly schedule and semester plan, as well as a handy tool to organize your assignments.
Stress Management
The unit on Stress Management explains techniques you can use to manage your stress and anxiety, including belly-breathing techniques, problem solving strategies, and mindfulness. It includes guided exercises for help on stressful days.
Reading and Note-Taking
The Reading and Note-Taking section explains how you can get the most out of class time and readings. It explains how to better absorb the material you’re reading in your textbook and how to take more useful notes in class.
Studying and Test-Taking
In the Studying and Test-Taking unit, you can learn how to expertly tackle tests and exams. You can find out what material you should be focusing on when you study, how you study best, and how to remember what you’ve learned. Over the next few months, Student Support Services will continue to build on these units, adding more great content. Check back throughout the year for units on presentation skills, group work, and career planning and development.
