Connor Gunn wins silver at the Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver

Connor Gunn wins silver in Automotive Service at Vancouver’s Skills Canada National Competition.

Skills Competences Canada (SCC) has been hosting the National Competition (SCNC) since 1994. Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s largest technical skills testing competitions, encompassing over 75 disciplines from Masonry to Cloud computing.

All 13 provinces and territories are represented by their own provincial branch of Skills Canada and hold their provincial competitions to qualify their competitors for the National level. There are both Secondary school and post-secondary categories in most competition areas.

In the recent past, all competitions were held virtually due to COVID-19. In 2022 hybrid versions of the competitions were held, with some being in-person and some virtual. SCNC Vancouver 2022 was held in-person for all post-secondary competitors and virtual for all secondary. Team Ontario achieved 53 medals while competing in 63 competitions, one of those being Connor.

Connor earned his place on Team Ontario by winning gold at the in-person Automotive Service competition held in Toronto in April of this year. An achievement that alone is admirable.

The two-day competition tested the nine eligible competitors skill levels in Suspension Systems, Driveline Systems, Electrical Fault Diagnosis, Braking Systems, Engine Failure diagnosis, and advanced Performance.

Connor is a recent graduate of the Automotive Service Technician program at Algonquin College. He is an encouraging example of leadership in our future workforce and represented Algonquin College and Ontario with integrity. He shows a passion for and desire to learn his trade going forward that will serve him well in the years to come.

Hats off to the Transportation faculty, who, despite enduring challenging times, fostered an encouraging and effective learning environment that helped Connor achieve this level and prepare him for a long and successful career.
