Brittany Oremush applying her skills to her passion – in Haiti

maxresdefaultBrittany Oremush, graduate of the Registered Practical Nursing program at the College, is looking forward to continuing her lifelong dream of helping those overseas by way of a volunteer opportunity with Team Broken Earth.

Team Broken Earth is a volunteer task force composed of physicians, nurses, and physiotherapists from across Canada committed to delivering and improving healthcare in Haiti. The team was initially assembled to support the relief effort in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake that left the people of Haiti in dire need of medical assistance.

When she heard of this opportunity to help in Haiti, Brittany was on board right away. Her inspiration to enter the field of healthcare is, and has always been, the concept of medicine without borders.

After taking a pre-nursing course following the completion of her high school diploma, Brittany came to Algonquin College to gain the transferrable skills and real world opportunities needed to succeed in the health care field. After spending two years at the College, she began working at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

Shortly after graduation in 2011, she participated in an opportunity with McGill University called SAMA (Student Association of Medical Aid). This was a month-long project that took place in Ethiopia, wherein students worked with orphanages to help spread educational information regarding health. Brittany assisted in the creation of focus groups based on age in order to aid the communication aspect of the project.

Brittany attributes the opportunities that she has been given to her time spent at Algonquin, which resulted in immediate employment at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. It was this opportunity that proved instrumental in positioning her for success not only within the Ottawa region – but wherever the lives and wellbeing of others may take her.

“That’s what I love about the RPN program here at Algonquin College, right from the beginning you are out in the workforce applying the knowledge and skills you have attained throughout your studies,” said Brittany.

Currently, Brittany’s end goal is to continue diversifying her medical skillset and would like to complete a full degree in Registered Nursing. Wherever she goes next, more abroad work is certainly on the horizon as work overseas will always be Brittany’s passion.

Congratulations on all your success Brittany, and best of luck to you and all of Team Broken Earth Ottawa in Haiti!
