Algonquin College speaks about Pride

This year, Algonquin College and the Students’ Association will participate in the Capital Pride Parade for the first time! Here’s what President Cheryl Jensen, Students’ Association President Deijanelle Simon, and Sarah Gauen, Algonquin College’s Inclusion and Diversity Specialist had to say about the exciting announcement.

Our students are committed to creating a culture of inclusion for LGBTQ2S+ community on all three of our campuses. And so are our employees. It’s part of our College values to care about others and also, to respect them. That’s why we want to invite you to march with us in Ottawa’s Capital Pride Parade.” – President Jensen

The idea to focus on LGBTQ+ inclusion arose from the annual priority setting process of the Inclusion and Diversity Circle. There was an interest in raising the visibility of this community in our Algonquin College workplaces. With support from the executive team, a sub-Circle was formed to plan our participation, including representation from marketing, the Mamidosewin Centre, faculty and admin staff, and of course we partnered with the Pride Centre and Students’ Association. Everyone agreed that the firetruck was a must have!” – Gauen

“It is estimated that 5 – 10% of the Canadian population identify as LGBTQ2+. Participating in the parade is a statement that LGBTQ2+ employees and students are an important and valued part of Algonquin College (its also a lot of fun!). The impact of participating is supported with research, 34% of LGBTQ2+ respondents to a 2018 national survey said they would feel more comfortable applying to an organization that had a float in a Pride parade or sponsored a Pride Festival.” – Gauen

“Here at Algonquin, we want to acknowledge our own Pride Week from October 29 to November 2, and remind you of the inclusive spirit you’ll find all year long at our Pride Centre, in room B102. You can stop by anytime for resources and friendship no matter your sexual orientation or gender identity. I’m proud of our College’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse environment and I’m looking forward to all of the upcoming events.” – SA President Simon

All LGBTQ2S+ staff, students and their allies are welcome to join in the parade on
August 26, 2018, Downtown Ottawa.
