Jason Vodden, Horticulture program professor and technician shared tips on how to keep your garden healthy during this extreme heat wave!
How to keep your garden healthy?
- The trick is to water, water, water! When it is hot and dry, you cannot get enough water to your garden.
How to keep squirrels away?
- Leaving a rubber snake in the garden is very effective. You can purchase one at the dollar store. Remember to move the snake around every few days so the squirrels don’t clue in that it’s fake.
How to protect your tomatoes?
- Epson Salts, which can be purchased at any drugstore, contain magnesium sulfate which is important for photosynthesis and the CO2 uptake of the plants. Add this to your watering can and water the tomatoes. They will go from a light lime green to a deep forest green.
- It is not too late to plant tomatoes, just make sure to pick off the bottom leaves and plant them deep.
How to protect your cruciferous vegetables? (think Cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, or brussels sprouts)
- A caterpillar which comes from a sulfur winged butterfly often lays eggs on these vegetables. Once they hatch, these baby caterpillars start to eat the plants.
- The best thing to do is to buy crinoline fabric (the mesh like fabric in tutus) and put it over the plant to stop the butterfly from laying eggs.
