Algonquin College wishes a happy 50th birthday to CHEO

To celebrate Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO)’s 50th anniversary, Algonquin College joins other institutions across Ottawa toCHEO hospital building with a purple filter on top mark the occasion by lighting up the night sky purple. The Woodroffe pedestrian bridge will be lit purple this evening, May 17. Purple is CHEO’s official colour.

From providing pediatric care to pioneering groundbreaking medical treatment, CHEO has held a special place in the community for 50 years.

“CHEO has been a long-standing partner for our health programs, from nursing and respiratory therapy to our suite of diagnostic imaging programs, students learn first-hand from our most critical patient voice of all, that of our children. They are a great friend and I wish them sincere congratulations on their milestone anniversary.” said Erin Stitt-Cavanagh, Dean, School of Health Studies.

Algonquin College has a long-standing relationship with CHEO.

  • Over 2,500 students have done their placements at CHEO since 2013.
  • Algonquin College sends approximately 140 BScN third year students to the Medicine unit (4E and 5E) and Surgery unit (4W) every fall.
  • For fourth year BScN Consolidation, CHEO is always one of the most coveted spots in the selection process, as they offer to place students in the Emergency Room, Intensive Care, and Mental Health units.
  • In the practical nursing (PN) programs, a few lucky Level 4 PN students get to do a group placement on either the 4E or 5E medical units, and for PN Consolidation it is always the first choice for almost every student.

“CHEO is an active member on our program advisory committee team and our students enjoy their learning experience at CHEO,” said Carmen Hust, Chair, Nursing, School of Health Studies. “Many practical nursing and BScN students are also hired upon graduation. This year alone, all the students that consolidated at CHEO were offered a position.”
