Skilled Trades & Technology Day for Young Women

Large group of students and staff at algonquin collegeOn Tuesday, Feb. 28, Algonquin College proudly hosted the Skilled Trades and Technology Day for Young Women in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence. It was an inspiring event, not only for the young women who attended but for our team of Algonquin College facilitators and lab leaders as well.

Despite the snow-white weather conditions, the event was marked with high attendance and smiling faces. Throughout the day, four groups of young women from grades seven to 11 rotated through different workshops where they had the chance to learn about various skilled trades. The workshops included a hands-on session with Milwaukee Tool, a robotic arm challenge, a demonstration of the electric pickle experiment and a session on how to make wooden picture frames. Following the workshops was a Q&A session with a panellist of experts and AC alumnae. Included in the panel was Laura Hutt, Construction Project Manager; Hannah Hempinstall, Automotive Mechanic; McKenna Goodwin, General Carpenter; Clara Ashton, HRAC Tech; and Stephanie Smith, a Welding and Fabrications professional.

This initiative was a meaningful opportunity for all involved and gave this group of young women the experience to try new activities – hopefully inspiring some to consider a career path in skilled trades and technology!
