Year in Review: Student Success Stories

Algonquin College students received a wide variety of honours and accolades in 2019. Here is a list of the people, places, and projects that have won awards this year.

1. Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition team honoured with Board of Governor’s Changemaker Award

Ontario Colleges' Marketing Competition teamStudent members of the Algonquin College Marketing Competition team participated in Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition in the fall of 2018, and were awarded the BOG Changemaker Award in February. The team finished in second place provincially, which is the best finish for the College in the 40-year history of the event. 2. Liz Clarke named 2019 CBC Trailblazer

Algonquin College student leader, Liz Clarke, has been named one of CBC’s 2019 Trailblazers – one of 10 “inspiring individuals who are leading change, breaking down barriers, and creating new possibilities in their communities.” Liz is a spoken word poet, and hip-hop artist working with youth to empower their voices. 3. Keshana King wins The Great Promise Award at Youth Innovation Summit

Business Management and Entrepreneurship student, Keshana King, won The Great Promise Award at the Active Citizens Youth Innovation Summit on Parliament Hill. The Great Promise Award is awarded to a social innovator who showed great promise and leadership potential, as well as development and growth since the first day of Active Citizens Training. 4. Pembroke students awarded Board of Governor’s Changemaker Award

Students from Pembroke’s Office Administration – Executive program have been honoured with a Changemaker Award from the Board of Governors. The honour was a tribute to the students’ fundraising efforts for social issues in Renfrew County, including Raise a Red Flag initiative (in partnership with the Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre), Coldest Night of the Year, and Project Hope for the Homeless in Renfrew County.

5. Algonquin College students win eight medals at Skills Ontario 2019

Skills OntarioAlgonquin College students brought home medals in eight different trades, including gold in Horticulture and Landscaping for the second year in a row. The College’s medal count includes one gold, two silver, and five bronze medals, distributed between nine skilled participants. They are:

  • Blaise Mombourquette and Thomas Hawley – Horticulture and Landscaping (Gold)
  • Christina Khenmanisoth – Restaurant Management (Silkver)
  • Krystal Wiles-Horscroft – Baking (Silver)
  • Jasmine Ebery – Hairstyling (Bronze)
  • Tom Kearney – Auto-Body Repair (Bronze)
  • Jordan Ball – Automotive Service Technician (Bronze)
  • Ahmed Jaffer – Restaurant Management (Bronze)
  • Chris Naranowicz – Carpentry – individual (Bronze)

6. Algonquin College Horticulture team wins gold at Skills Canada

Skills CanadaBlaise Mombourquette and Thomas Hawley didn’t waste their second chance at a golden opportunity. The Horticulture Industries students took home the gold medal at the Skills Canada competition in June.

7. Skills Ontario medal winners honoured with Student Changemaker Awards

Student Changemaker Award winnersAt the Skills Ontario competition in May, nine students brought home medals in eight different trades. Upon their return, the students were each awarded the Student Changemaker Award.

8. Algonquin College Bachelors of Hospitality and Tourism Management students place second in global hospitality competition

Algonquin College Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management studentsThree Algonquin College Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management students took home second place in Take Off!, a global hospitality competition held in Paris. Their ground-breaking concept for the hotel room of the future – a highly customizable, multi-sensory, AI environment – impressed the judges. The students, known by their team name ‘Cultures United’ beat out over 500 worldwide competitors with their pitch on how Artificial Intelligence can enhance the experiences of hotel guests. 9. ACPR raises $22,000 in Hope Heals campaign

Algonquin College Public Relations students celebrated the success of their Hope Heals campaign, in support of the Centre for Treatment of Sexual Abuse and Childhood Trauma. Over six weeks, a group of 55 students held 11 events, from a murder mystery dinner and a formal high tea, to a beer and wine tasting and a karaoke night. The events raised a total of $22,000 for the Centre.

10. Algonquin College hosts record-setting RE/ACTION: Applied Research Showcase

RE/ACTION: Applied Research Showcase

With a record-setting 108 projects at 113 booths, RE/ACTION was bigger and better than ever. Ranging from robotics and innovative apps to artificial intelligence, the projects were incredibly diverse.


11. Algonquin College’s first competitive cricket team wins Capital Cup and qualifies for Nationals

A group of international students have become local cricket champions. Algonquin College’s first competitive cricket team largely consists of international students from India. They defeated other local post-secondary teams at the Capital Cup on the weekend to earn the right to compete in Nationals.

12. Algonquin College students win at #HIP613 Hackathon

Algonquin College students from the SLiDE/Social Innovation LabTwo Algonquin College students from the SLiDE/Social Innovation Lab were named People’s Choice Award Winners at the #HIP613 Hackathon at Shopify for their idea of a ‘Gamified Mental Health Resource Library App.’
