Algonquin Times declared top campus newspaper in Ontario!

The Algonquin Times has been awarded top campus newspaper in the province at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association’s Better Newspapers Competition, besting newspapers from Humber College and Niagara College to take the General Excellence category.

“Our students continue to show why Algonquin College’s program is the destination of choice for those who wish to practice and showcase excellence in Ontario advertising and journalism,” said Joe Banks, Coordinator and professor for the College’s Journalism program. “Our faculty are among the best in Canada and they too can take time to reflect on programs that they evolved over years. The entire College can also take pride in this, as it is the Algonquin community that has given time to our students for interviews, research and sales.”

It was a successful year for the Times, which had been shortlisted for three student journalism awards for 2018, including two overall categories (General Excellence and Best College/University Newspaper Website) and Student Photography (Karine Beaulieu).

In addition to winning the General Excellence category, the Times also picked up the award for Best Website and placed second in the photography category.

The awards were presented at the Hilton Garden Inn in Vaughan, Ontario.

The student newspaper is produced by Algonquin College’s Journalism and Advertising and Marketing Communications Management students.
