The 7 Best Places to Study on the Ottawa Campus
Posted on Wednesday, May 29th, 2019
We gave you a list of all common area study spaces, but now we’ve asked students and criss-crossed the Ottawa campus in search of the very best study spots, the crème de la crème, the cat’s meow, the bee’s knees, the… you get the idea. From sunlit “pods” to hallways off the beaten path, we’ve got the places to check out for your next cramming session.
1. The brand new Library/Learning Centre in the DARE District
If you’re looking for study or research resources, or want to ask a research question, the Library is the place to be. Located on the 3rd floor of the DARE District (C350), the Library has plenty of spaces to study on your own or in a group, plus the space is open 24/7. There is so much natural light coming in that makes it a really bright spot. You can find useful books, or make use of the computers and printers. If you run in to trouble, ask one of the Library’s friendly staff members for help! Check out the library website for more information and resources.
2. Silent Study Rooms
Like it quiet – like really quiet – when you’re working? The Students’ Association has two silent study rooms, located in E210 in Student Commons (they even has sleeping pods for you nappers) and A118, across from the Fitness Zone. Both have food nearby (Starbucks, Booster Juice, and Tim Horton’s) and offer a combination of cushy chairs and desks. Take the term “silent” seriously though – this is where you go when you need to cut out all distractions.
3. Meeting Rooms
Prefer to study as a group? Round up a few of your classmates and book one of the boardroom-style Students’ Association meeting rooms (located in the Student Commons and in A Building). These spaces offer TVs that can be hooked up to your laptops (great for note sharing, or going over videos or PowerPoints), as well as whiteboards for collaborative work. (The SA provides the HDMI cable and whiteboard markers.) Book A Building meeting rooms at the Fitness Zone, and E Building meeting rooms at the SA office.
4. T Building
You’ll often happen upon these study nooks just by wandering around T Building – we’re partial to the ones on the second and third floors, in particular. Featuring high top seating, cushy benches, and small tables, these quiet corners are nestled against large windows and offer nice treetop views. Plus, you’re not far from Bits n’ Bytes cafe!
5. E Building/AC Hub
The AC Hub is located in E Building above the Starbucks. This open concept is great for working on group projects and collaborating. Right below it, beside the Starbucks is the ‘Corner Lounge’. The Corner Lounge is also a perfect spot to plug in and work before class or to use as meeting point for group work.
6. CA Building (ACCE)
Light and airy, this popular “Study Interaction Hub” houses tiered seating that cascades down from the second floor to the first (larger tables in the tiers, individual comfy chairs on the bottom floor). The second floor is also home to hanging “study pods” with individual bar seating. One of the best things about this communal study area is the floor to ceiling windows and the five-storey biowall with living plants, which offers a little piece of nature indoors.
7. B Building
Second floor of B Building has an abundance of study areas. It’s a high-traffic area, but you’re close to food (Portable Feast and a number of vending machines on the first floor) and there’s something to suit every need: cushy chairs with small tables for pairs or groups of four, partially glassed-in study spaces for groups, bar-style seating, and a room with individual study stations.
