Out of Town Exams
If you are located 100 km or more from Ottawa, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to write your exam(s) at a post-secondary institution in your area. If one is not in reasonable proximity, it is possible to write at an educational institution such as a high school under the supervision of a full-time professor, teacher, or appropriate designate. Proctors must be educational professionals, including professors, librarians, or their designates. To avoid conflict of interest concerns, the proctor may not be a relative, co-worker (including immediate supervisor), neighbour, friend, or person with the same address as the student.
Any fees charged by a proctor are the responsibility of the student. Colleges and universities often have Test Centers where they proctor exams on a regular basis. If you are not a student at their institution, there is often a charge. You would have to confirm the exam writing fees with your proctor and you will be responsible for the fee.
If there are no colleges in your area, any kind of educational institution is acceptable, such as libraries, high schools, tutoring centers, etc. Not all of these places proctor exams so it would be up to you to research this.
Please note that for computer-based exams, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure that the proctor has the appropriate software required to complete the exam. Students are not able to write final exams on their personal devices.
Once you have located an appropriate proctor, you will need to book your exam with them. This exam must be written by the exam writing deadline. After you have booked your exam with your proctor, you will need to fill out and electronically submit the Proctor Booking Confirmation Form located in our Exam Booking System.
You will need to include the following information:
- Exam date and time
- Proctor name and title
- Proctor email address
- Business Organization name and address (this is where the exam will be sent)
- Business phone number
Requests to write exams out of town will be reviewed and approved by the Exam Coordinator. If your proctor request is denied, you will receive an email indicating why your form was not accepted and requesting you to resubmit.
