What We Do
The Apprenticeship Success Centre provides support to students enrolled in pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs at Algonquin College.
The Apprenticeship Success Centre offers services that help apprentices at every level of their program completion (i.e., Basic-Level 1, Intermediate-Level 2, Advanced-Level 3) and when preparing for the Certification of Qualification (C of Q).
The Apprenticeship Success Centre follows a team approach that involves you (the student) and your professors to promote overall success and wellness.
Our goal is to provide academic accommodations, learning strategies, assistive technology, and equipment loan services to equalize the opportunity for students to meet their essential course or program requirements. All services are free, confidential and voluntary.
The Apprenticeship Success Centre provides the following support:
- Academic accommodations, such as extra time for tests
- Assistive technology, such as a speech-to-text or text-to-speech software
- Learning strategies for time management, notetaking, and studying
- Tutoring
- Peer notetaking (ASC Peer Notetaking Contract – Fillable)
- Workshops

What is an apprenticeship program?
Students in apprenticeship programs follow a different process to receive their certificate than other programs at Algonquin College. An apprentice is sponsored by an employer who then enrols the individual with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to receive an invitation to complete the in-class portion of training at Algonquin College. How do I register for Apprenticeship Success Centre services?
Registration is easy. Phone, e-mail, or come in person to speak with an Apprenticeship Success Centre staff member.
Please complete the Request for Services Form and e-mail to apprenticesuccess@algonquincollege.com or drop-off in person (Room CA102, ACCE Building, Ottawa Campus) to start the registration process.

What are academic accommodations?
Academic accommodations address disability-related barriers that impact a student’s ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills to meet course requirements. Accommodations are mandated by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Accommodations do not ensure success but equalize opportunity.
Accommodations are not used for a non-disability-related purpose (e.g., family emergency). They do not change the learning requirements or objectives.
How do apprenticeship students access test accommodations?
The Apprenticeship Success Centre provides a safe test facility exclusively for apprentices with testing accommodations. Examples of accommodations include quiet space, extended time, and a reader and scribe.

What kind of documentation is required to access accommodations as an apprenticeship student?
Access to accommodations is decided between you and your Disabilities Counsellor based on discussion of your learning strengths and areas of need.
Documentation from a regulated health care professional (e.g., physician, psychologist, psychiatrist) that confirms a temporary or permanent disability is preferred. A copy of the Medical Information Request Form (MIRF) can be completed by your physician. However, if accessing documentation is not possible, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is acceptable to access temporary (interim) accommodations.

What is a Letter of Accommodation?
A Letter of Accommodation (LOA) is a confidential document that states the accommodations to which a student registered with the CAL is entitled. It describes both in-class and quiz/test/exam accommodations and is used to notify professors of students’ accommodation needs. The LOA is created by the Disabilities Counsellor in partnership with the student.
How do I borrow equipment and access technology to support my learning?
Don’t have a laptop? We have you covered. Whether you need a laptop, software, noise-cancelling headphones, or recording tools (e.g., Livescribe pen), drop in to the Apprenticeship Success Centre and borrow the technology that will help you with your learning.
When technology is accessed as an accommodation (e.g., recording tools, reading software for a quiz/test/exam), a meeting with your Disabilities Counsellor is needed to identify these accommodations on your Letter of Accommodation (LOA).
How do I access math coaching and tutoring services?
Math coaching services are FREE and offered through the Student Learning Centre (SLC) at Algonquin College. You can find the On-Campus Drop-in (no appointment needed) schedule and location here: https://algonquincollege.libguides.com/slc/math
Peer tutoring is also offered by SLC for a fee of $8/hour.

Where can I learn computer skills such as how to use my Microsoft Office, Brightspace and Zoom software?
The Student Learning Centre (SLC) provides FREE workshops for Algonquin College students.
