TSC: Support Before Post-Secondary
Transition Support for Families
The purpose of the Transition Support Centre (TSC) is to facilitate a successful transition to post-secondary education for Autistic students. We recognize that planning and preparing for this transition can be a time-consuming, intensive, individualized process that often involves many people.
Support Person/Parent Support
We recognize that parents/support persons have played, and will continue to play, a fundamental role in advocacy for their student as they transition to post-secondary education. As such, we encourage communication between parents/support persons and the TSC in the year leading up to the transition for information about college readiness, documentation requirements, and opportunities for skill-building. We will be communicating directly with our students once they begin their first semester of college.
Support for Students before the Academic Year Begins
Students are expected to take responsibility for their post-secondary experience, including meeting with staff, identifying their needs, and connecting with other services when necessary.
At the TSC, we realize that these activities can be a challenge for Autistic students. TSC staff are fully prepared to support students as they develop self-advocacy skills. Parents/support persons play an important role by continuing to support students within the family environment.
Although students can apply with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) and the Transition Support Centre (TSC) at any time during a student’s academic experience, it is preferable to apply for support before the academic year begins.
It is recommended for students to apply to the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) one-three months BEFORE the start of the semester. This will ensure adequate time to create a Letter of Accommodation, identify appropriate Assistive Technologies, attend workshops on College platforms (Brightspace) and tour associated resources.
