Mac Computers

Do you have a Mac Laptop and your program requires a Windows PC?

What does this mean for you? This means that your professors will be teaching in a Windows environment and you may have to install some software that requires Windows OS.

You have a few options to choose from:

  1. Install UTM Software | Virtual Machine for MAC
UTM is a full featured system emulator and virtual machine host for iOS and macOS. It is based off of QEMU. In short, it allows you to run Windows, Linux, and more on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Software can be downloaded from: https://mac.getutm.app/
  2. Install Parallels Desktop for Mac (cost)
Parallels allows you to run Microsoft Windows applications on an Apple Mac computer. Parallels Desktop for Mac is a hardware emulation virtualisation software to allow users to install and use Windows specific applications from their Macs.
It can be purchased online (https://www.parallels.com/plans/education/) or through the Algonquin College’s Connections: The Campus Store. You are able to purchase it with the educational discount at 50% off.
  3. Install Bootcamp (free)
Bootcamp allows you to boot into Windows or Mac OS; you will only be able to run one operating system at a time. Learn more about Bootcamp.
Please note: Boot Camp is no longer supported by the Apple devices with an M1 chip.

Alternative Options:

To access a wide range of college-approved software without the need of Windows, you can use MyApps or Azure VD, or the college lab computers, where most of the approved software is already installed.
