FAQ
As a student in the program, can I still achieve the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, in view of recent changes to their accreditation?
Effective September 28, 2024, the core and advanced curriculum program for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation offered by CIFP will no longer be accredited by FP Canada. You might be wondering how this will impact your plans to achieve the CFP designation. Please note the following key points:
1. Transition Arrangement with FP Canada:
We have secured a special arrangement with FP Canada for current students in both the Financial Services and Financial Services – Canadian Context programs. FP Canada has granted a one-year transition period, meaning that for the 2024-2025 academic year, financial planning courses completed by Algonquin College students in these programs will continue to be recognized as meeting the technical requirements for CFP certification. Specifically, you will need to pass the following financial planning courses at Algonquin College:
-
- FIN2311
- FIN2302
- FIN2319
- FIN2327
- FIN2328
- FIN2313
- FIN2326
Upon completion, your Algonquin College transcript will be accepted by FP Canada as fulfillment of the technical requirements for certification.
2. Chartered Financial Planner Designation through CIFP:
Additionally, by completing the five CIFP courses included in your program (through CIFP) and CSC courses, you may wish to pursue the Chartered Financial Planner designation (different from Certified Financial Planner, CFP, designation offered by FP Canada) through CIFP. For more information on this option, you can visit: CIFP Chartered Institute of Financial Planning.
What if I do not have a degree or diploma in business?
An eligibility package can be sent to you. We ask you to define your previous education and work experience and identify transferable knowledge and skills. We can then help you determine if this program is a good fit for you. Please contact the program coordinator for a package.
Is there any software that I need to buy?
No, however, you do need a Windows-based PC for this BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. Please check online for a system specifics. Some software used in this program is not compatible with Apple Mac computers.
