Still Time to Apply for Fall 2013 Business Programs

The Twittersphere was exploding yesterday with happy future Algonquin College students sharing the news that they had received their Offers of Admission for Fall. We’re just as excited and looking forward to welcoming everyone in September!

February 1 was the equal consideration application date. That just means that all applications received before February 1 would be considered equally. After February 1, applications for open programs are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you haven’t applied yet, don’t worry! There are still plenty of programs that are still open, including all of the School of Business programs with the exception of Paralegal.

Dean Dave’s term as Chair of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce ends with a flourish

On Tuesday January 22, Dave Donaldson, Dean of the School of Business at Algonquin College, was honored as the outgoing Chair of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. City officials and industry leaders gathered at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier to bear witness as he passed the torch to Mark Sutcliffe, broadcaster, author, and member of the Algonquin College Board of Governors.

In an article published in the Ottawa Business Journal last week, Dave reflected on his experience as Chair.

“My time at the Chamber has given me a unique perspective on the dynamic and diverse business community in Ottawa. I hope that what I have learned will assist us in developing even better and more integrated programs in the School of Business and that the Ottawa business community has a better perspective of Algonquin College and its place in the Ottawa community.”

The article went on to highlight one of the main differences the Chamber experienced under Dave’s leadership – its relationship with City Hall.

“We made a lot of progress there, where we were trying to get away from reacting to what city hall was doing and more influencing city hall and I think Dave was very, very effective in that,” said Erin Kelly, the former executive director who was with the chamber during much of Mr. Donaldson’s time in the position. She cited his willingness to take a stand on contentious matters of public policy – rather than talking until a consensus was reached within the business community – as one of the main factors.

To cap off the event, Dave was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by Mayor Jim Watson. Dave was nominated by Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches for his outstanding contributions to both the Chamber and the city.

Congratulations Dave! Thank you for your continued and tireless efforts for the Algonquin College community and the City of Ottawa.

Competitive Advantage

Winter Open House at Algonquin College on Saturday January 19, 2013

Saturday, January 19 marked the Winter Open House at Algonquin College, managed by the College’s Recruitment team. The School of Business area was manned by faculty volunteers, arranged and coordinated by our amazing Marketing Officer, Laura Campbell.

One of the activities was for prospective students and their parents to attend a panel discussion of current student and graduates. College provides a unique opportunity for students to learn from seasoned professionals with a passion for their industry in a setting that combines academic excellence with practical applications so they graduate ready to work with the proper skill sets. The less wordy description is applied learning.

The panelists refered this key differentiating characteristic during their presentations. The two current students talked about their experience and confidently predicted their future success because of the knowledge that had gained from their studies.

The graduates acknowledged the success in their careers because they had the practical ability to apply what they had learned in the marketplace. All panelists identified applied learning as a critical part of their studies and learning.

Colleges such as Algonquin College and schools such as Business are successful and our graduates find meaningful employment because of the expertise of the faculty, the relatively small classes and the commitment of the institution at all levels to aid and ensure success. But these panelists identified the key competitive advantage for them as college graduates was the applied learning provided at Algonquin.

Celebration Time – School of Business Awards and Pembroke Campus Grand Opening

There have been two significant celebrations this week. On Tuesday, under the masterful organization of Shannon Park, the School of Business Awards were held.

Shannon Park, AC Biz grad and Assistant to the Dean of the School of Business

At the Awards Gala bursaries and scholarships are presented to outstanding students. This event requires four major components:

  1. The students – their dedication to their studies and effort to excel results in their recognition for awards;
  2. Their parents, siblings, significant others and friends – support is a critical part to their success;
  3. The professors and staff – the School of Business is blessed with outstanding faculty and staff; industry professionals who to pass on their knowledge and engage these future business leaders;
  4. The donors – alumni, employers and the business community who show a dedication and interest in assisting the next generation by their generous support.

Winners of the Nelson Scholarship for Initiative and Academic Achievement. Recipients: Abigail Bate, Cristha Sinden-Masson, Amanda Harding, Veronique D’Aoust, and Adam Brescacin

After a brief networking and social opportunity, the award recipients were announced and presented with their awards by the donors with proud supporters cheering them on. This is one of my favourite events – graduation being the other.

On Thursday, the Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley campus in Renaissance Square in Pembroke was officially opened. As Dr. Kent MacDonald, Algonquin College president, observed, a new campus for Pembroke has been discussed for over 25 years. This state of the art facility was officially opened with acknowledgement to the College Board, the City of Pembroke and the Student association for making the dream a reality.

My friend and colleague, Karen Davies, dean of the campus, with her management team, worked tirelessly for the past 4 years to see this exciting new building opened.

Graduates from the five decades the campus has been in operation were introduced, including country recording artist, Jason Blaine whose sung, Renaissance, underscored the importance of this new structure to the college, the area and its students: https://www.algonquincollege.com/pembroke/main_entry/video_page_12.htm.

Congratulations to the ACOV family for a job well done.
