FAQ

When I complete this program, do I automatically become a member of the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management?
The Algonquin College Food and Nutrition graduate certificate program is accredited by the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM). You are immediately able to apply for CSNM membership following graduation. Membership is a requirement to many food service management positions in healthcare and is mandatory for managing the food service in long-term care facilities in Ontario.

How do the September and January intakes work?
The September (Fall) intake consists of the Fall and Winter semesters (from September to April), plus a five-week field placement. Students are usually finished by mid-July.
The January (Winter) intake consists of the Winter and Spring/Summer semesters (January to August), plus a five-week field placement. Students are usually finished by mid-October.

Is there an interview or does that depend on my qualifications?
Most students enter the program based on their academic qualifications. Interviews are conducted if it is deemed necessary. The program coordinator will also meet with applicants if they have questions about the program.

Are any of the courses available online?
The program is a hybrid model which means that in-class time is supplemented by directed learning outside of the classroom. However, the program is not an online learning situation as class attendance is required. The program is offered in the Fall.

Since there are six courses in the 1st term and five in the 2nd term, is it possible for me to continue to work while I study?
The program is designed to allow our students to continue to work. In the first semester, classes are condensed over three days and over two days in the second semester. However, our program is a hybrid which means that the learning is done as a combination of class time (as indicated above) and out-of-class activities which include online searches, discussions and activities, as well as self-directed and guided learning. This style means that in-class commitment is limited and allows you to complete the out-of-class work when you have the time.

Is the field placement (as part of the second semester) arranged by the college or do I find my own placement after the school year is complete?
The field placement is arranged by the college unless you have specific requests. It is a full-time, five-week, unpaid work experience where your schedule is determined by the workplace host. All courses must be successfully completed before the work placement commences and the placement must be successfully completed before you graduate.
